What is an early pregnancy (reassurance) scan?

An early pregnancy scan, often called a reassurance scan, is a private ultrasound scan from 7 weeks. The sonographer checks for a heartbeat, that the pregnancy is in the womb and how many babies there are, and measures baby to date your pregnancy. At Meet Your Miracle it costs £75, takes about 10 minutes and includes a well-being report, a print and digital images. It is not a diagnostic scan.

Before you book. We scan abdominally from 7 weeks. If you are unsure of your dates, book for 8 weeks or later so there is enough to see. Re-scans are not routinely offered on early pregnancy scans, and no re-scan or refund is offered if you attend before 7 weeks and nothing can be seen. Re-scans are offered at the sonographer's discretion. Read our re-scan policy.

  • Does not check cervical length

Early Pregnancy Scan questions

How early can I have a scan?

From 7 weeks, which is when baby can be seen with an abdominal probe. If you are not sure of your dates, book for 8 weeks or later. Before 7 weeks there is every chance nothing will be seen, and no re-scan or refund is offered in that case. A digital pregnancy test that estimates weeks can help you time your appointment.

What does the early pregnancy scan check?

The sonographer checks for a heartbeat and measures it, checks the pregnancy is in the womb, counts how many babies there are and measures baby from crown to rump to date the pregnancy. You get a well-being report, a print and digital images. It is not a diagnostic scan and does not replace your NHS 12-week scan.

What the NHS 12-week scan checks

Do I need a full bladder?

Yes, if you are under 12 weeks. A full bladder lifts the uterus so we can see clearly with an abdominal scan. From 12 weeks it is not needed.

What happens if you cannot see a heartbeat?

We will tell you openly and support you, and make a direct referral to your local NHS early pregnancy unit. Every scan includes a well-being check, and anything we think needs NHS follow-up is referred and explained to you on the day.

Can this scan tell me my due date?

Up to 14 weeks we measure baby from crown to rump and use that to estimate your dates, the same measurement the NHS uses at the 12-week scan. Your NHS dating scan remains your official due date.

Can you see twins this early?

Yes. Counting how many babies there are is part of the scan, at the same price. For later scans of twins we offer 20-minute appointments so each baby gets a proper look.

Do you offer a re-scan on early pregnancy scans?

Not routinely. Early scans depend on how far along you are, so please be sure of your dates before you book. The sonographer may offer a re-scan at their discretion.

Can I use this scan later in pregnancy?

Yes. The same scan is available up to 40 weeks as a well-being check or to confirm baby’s position.

How long will my appointment last?

Allow 30 to 45 minutes in the studio. The scan itself is 10 minutes (20 minutes for twins), then you choose your images. If baby is being shy we may ask you to have a walk or a bounce on our birth ball and try again. Please arrive 10 minutes early: if you are late we may not be able to see you.

Can I bring family or children?

Yes. Family, friends and children are welcome. Every studio has a large scan room with an HD projector screen, seating for six and standing room.

Is a private ultrasound scan safe?

Ultrasound has been used in pregnancy for decades and, despite extensive studies, has not been shown to cause harm to mum or baby. Our scans work on the same principles as your hospital 2D scan, and our scanning team follows the same safety guidelines.

Does this replace my NHS scans?

No. Our scans are elective, non-diagnostic scans for bonding and well-being. They supplement your NHS care and do not replace your NHS 12-week and 20-week scans. If we see something on the scan that we think needs NHS follow-up we will tell you openly and make the referral.

What the NHS 20-week scan checks

What if I need to cancel or move my appointment?

You can move your appointment free of charge if you call the studio more than 24 hours before it. Cancellations more than 24 hours before are refunded minus a £5 admin charge. Within 24 hours the payment is lost, because the slot cannot be resold.

Do you scan anyone under 18?

No. Our CQC registration does not cover scanning anyone under 18, so we cannot offer scans to under-18s.
